Zaha Hadid Architects’ First Project in Malaysia: Discovery City @ IBTEC Johor

by creativehomex

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), in partnership with JLand Group Sdn Bhd (JLG), has been selected to design Discovery City, a visionary 582-acre mixed-use district within the expansive Ibrahim Technopolis (IBTEC) in Johor, Malaysia. This landmark project marks ZHA’s debut in Malaysia, blending innovative architectural design with sustainability to create a dynamic urban precinct.

At the heart of Discovery City will be a cultural centre, ZHA’s first completed building in Malaysia, anchoring a masterplan deeply connected to Johor’s natural environment. The development aligns with IBTEC’s goal of fostering a circular city model, prioritising innovation and sustainability. The masterplan incorporates smart city technologies, advanced construction methods, and eco-friendly design strategies, such as:
– Using locally sourced and recycled materials
– Generating renewable energy
– Implementing rainwater harvesting systems
These measures aim to reduce energy and water consumption significantly, enhancing ecological sustainability.

The project integrates local expertise, with HIJJAS Architects and Planners serving as the Local Project Architect and AJM-Planning and Urban Design Group Sdn Bhd (APUDG) as the master planner. Discovery City is envisioned as a showcase for sustainable urbanism within IBTEC, highlighting circular economy principles to drive sustainable growth in southern Malaysia.

Discovery City is also designed to meet stringent environmental standards, including:
– Malaysia’s Low Carbon Cities Framework (LCCF)
– LEED Certification
– These benchmarks reinforce IBTEC’s dedication to setting new standards for sustainable development in Malaysia

The detailed design for Discovery City is expected to be revealed in 2025, setting the stage for this transformative project. Speaking on the vision, Gianluca Racana, Director at Zaha Hadid Architects, said: “This is an extraordinary opportunity to explore architecture’s ability to enhance its natural context, creating synergy between the built and natural environments. Discovery City will inspire while respecting its surroundings.”
