Brick by Beautiful Brick: The Montpellier Residence Enhances its Architectural Heritage with Unique Material Treatments

by creativehomex

Nestled in the picturesque neighbourhood of Saint-Bruno on Montreal’s South Shore, the Montpellier Residence showcases the beauty of Mid-Century aesthetics in Quebec, Canada. Originally built in the late 1960s, this iconic home is now listed as a cultural heritage gem.

“This modern residence, characteristic of North American bungalows, stands out with its volumetric interplay and clean lines. Completely clad in brick, the house features no ornamentation, allowing the expressive nature of the materials to take center stage. The residence consists of three distinct single-story volumes, all connected by a glass corridor,” the lead designer from Vives St-Laurent shares.

The challenge for the design team was to renovate the living areas while maintaining the original architect’s vision. The focus was on updating the vestibule, kitchen, dining room, lounges, and powder room, with additional improvements made for enhanced comfort and natural light. The homeowners played an active role, sharing their desire for a timeless and unique space. To better understand the ambiance and functionality, the design team even stayed in the house for a few days.

The renovation project started in the vestibule, which serves as a transition between the front and rear courtyards, separating the day and night areas. The front door, with its oversized pivot-mounted structure and circular handle, sets the tone for the residence. Inside, careful restoration preserved the slate flooring, skylight, and dark wood ceiling cladding, respecting the original finishes.

The main living areas comprise a cosy seating area, dining room, living room, and an informal workspace. The centrepiece is the elegant Taj Mahal stone island in the kitchen, complemented by dark stained oak and lacquered cabinets. Natural materials like oak flooring and a lime wash plaster finish add texture and harmony. The renovation successfully blends elegance and modernity, creating a functional and captivating home for a family of four, while staying true to its mid-century charm.
