Perched on the serene outskirts of Shanghai, amidst the rolling countryside of Pudong, a striking architectural marvel emerges—a harmonious blend of modern minimalism and timeless tradition. This six-bedroom holiday retreat was designed as a sanctuary for an extended family to reconnect with nature and each other.
Shanghai-based architectural firm Atelier LI has seamlessly blended modern architectural language with traditional design principles, navigating local building regulations to craft a unique typology. This design bridges the lifestyles of its occupants: the elderly, who maintain traditional farming practices, and the younger generation, who favour contemporary comforts amidst a tranquil natural setting. The result is a thoughtful synthesis of modern aesthetics, practicality, and cultural significance, fostering an ongoing dialogue between tradition and innovation.
The design was shaped by stringent local regulations, which governed dimensions, height, and roof forms based on the footprint of the site’s previous structure. Undeterred, Atelier LI embraced these constraints, designing a minimalist white facade that contrasts strikingly with the verdant landscape. The clean lines and contemporary form of the villa make a bold statement about the viability of modern architectural intervention within a rural context, without diminishing its connection to the locale.
A commitment to greenery is central to the architectural vision. The design dissolves boundaries between indoors and outdoors, allowing the surrounding nature to permeate the structure. Courtyards strategically placed on various levels, combined with vertical and internal gardens, imbue the villa with a serene atmosphere, uniting interior spaces with the external environment.
One of the villa’s defining elements is its elongated horizontal volume, spanning 21 metres and cantilevering boldly over the terrain. This dramatic gesture not only maximises views of the adjacent orchard but also compensates for interior space allocated to courtyards. Large windows flood the interiors with natural light, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the day. This meticulous choreography enhances the villa’s sense of openness and harmony, reinforcing its role as a contemporary retreat that respects and celebrates its natural and cultural surroundings.
