The third session of Cosentino’s Design X Dialogue, held in collaboration with IDr Lai Siew Hong, Chief Executive Designer of Blue Water Studio, focused on the theme “Crafting Narratives Through Space”. The event took place at the Cosentino Showroom and featured prominent designers IDr Joe Chan, Founder of DesignTone Interior Practice, and IDr Patrick Chin, Director of Pride Studio, who discussed how storytelling plays a key role in design.
Both designers stressed the importance of creating spaces with strong narratives. According to IDr Patrick, “Storytelling is one of the main ingredients to create an emotional connection with the audience by weaving the narrative into the design and serves as a powerful tool for building brand identity.” IDr Joe echoed this sentiment, adding, “Storytelling enriches the design process and outcome by infusing spaces with deeper meaning and creating a more engaging and personalised experience.”
When it comes to inspiration, both designers noted that narratives can come from many places. IDr Patrick shared that he draws “inspiration in travel, movies, collaboration, art, design trends, and nature.” IDr Joe mentioned that his inspiration comes from “reading, exploring online, travelling, and staying deeply aware of his surroundings.”
As for key elements in designing spaces that tell a story, IDr Patrick said, “depth and dimension are crucial, as these elements transform a design into a narrative experience that goes beyond mere visual and functional solutions.” IDr Joe highlighted the importance of “understanding the context of the space and its surroundings and intertwining it with the emotive response.”
Both designers also shared their design philosophies. IDr Patrick’s approach focuses on combining functionality, aesthetics, and emotional impact. He said this creates “a memorable experience.” One of his projects, Upstairs Downstairs Co-Living Space in Bukit Bintang, was inspired by the Urban New Gen demographic and featured playful elements like a bright orange faux facade resembling a laundromat. Another project, PetitParc by Vixon & Cupid at Pavilion Damansara Heights, was a co-working space for parents with an indoor playground for children. It was inspired by nature and included features like rainbow-shaped arches and pebble-shaped lamps to create a sense of wonder.
On the other hand, IDr Joe believes in a flexible design approach. “Designs shouldn’t be confined to a single, distinct style,” he explained. His team’s adaptable mindset allows them to create “solutions that are uniquely suited to their context, ensuring that form and function are harmoniously aligned.” He shared examples from projects like 168 Park Selayang and AIA’s The Core Office, both of which were shaped by their surroundings and focused on the behaviour and needs of the occupants.
The designers also touched on the challenges of maintaining a consistent narrative in design. IDr Patrick uses a detailed plan that includes mood boards, sketches, and prototypes, along with regular reviews. Similarly, IDr Joe continually refines his process, revisiting phases to ensure cohesion and impact. Budget and space constraints can also be challenging, and IDr Patrick noted the value of creative solutions like multifunctional furniture and affordable materials to maintain the design narrative.
