This single-bedroom condominium unit at Desa Green was decorated by Jashen Interior Design to embody a balanced blend of rural and modern influences.
The modern lines of this home’s furnishings and fittings stretch from the entryway to the balcony doors, softened along the way by back-lit wood façades and faux finishes on walls. The kitchen cabinets bear perforated metal sheets on the front faces, separated from the wood on walls by dark solid surface counter-tops. The open spaces are demarcated by wall-hugging furnishings to retain space – a ceiling-height cabinet in the kitchen marks the end of the culinary space, while bookshelves on either side of the hall indicate the beginning of the seating lounge.
The compact dining table and accompanying bench seating help to preserve space in this open layout, with their relatively tight footprints providing additional space for the hall leading to the bedroom to be marked out with bookshelves. Opposite the conventional standing bookshelf is a unique shelf with a frame that seams to lean back in a manner similar to vintage newspaper racks. Both these shelves are constructed in modern style, with steel trays suspended by steel frames of square pipe in black.
The sharp lines of the modern furnishings are offset by the use of a high-pile shag carpet in cream which provides a plush element of vintage persuasion. In contrast to the straight edges of the television console and coffee table, the nearby sofa adheres to the rustic theme, being constructed out of planks of lightly stained natural wood, with wheels in place of legs on its black metallic frame.
Sunlight filters through a layer of sheer curtains patterned with lines depicting a pair of vintage bicycles. The bicycles are part of this home’s recurring theme involving vintage elements, appearing elsewhere in this home as miniature models.
The modern and rustic elements continue in tandem in the bedroom, with the dark wood of furnishings being held together by black frames. The dark stained wood panels provide furnishings with a rustic quality, contrasted against the modern industrial aesthetic evoked by metal frames powder-coated in carbon. The faux finish that is dry-brushed on the wall behind the bedstead and the choice of visible stitching in the bedspread serve to further augment the rural effect.
