6 Interior Colour Schemes to Spruce Up your Tired-Looking Living Room

by creativehomex

Colour plays an important role in the ambience of a house. Not only it sets the mood,it affects our emotions, and it also show one’s personal style and taste.

We were asked regularly regarding the way to choose colours. There is no bad colour, just bad colour combination. To those who are new to colour combination, the safest way to do it is by limiting the total number of colours existing in a space to not more than 3 colours. More colours will affect the visual and create lethargy.

We would suggest to follow the golden ratio of 6:3:1 rule.

Your 60 percent is the main colour for your room. It’s the places with most of the surface area like the ceiling, floor, wall and large accent pieces like sofa, armchair, carpet and etc.

You can choose a low opacity, soft and neutral colour that you like. For example,by using pastel pink, pastel green, pastel yellow or pastel blue and the main background colour, the space will be visually less complicated and provoking, and these colours will help soothe the mood too.I believe that everyone wants their home to be soothing.

Your 30 percent is the secondary colour. One can use it on the coffee table, dining chairs, book cabinet, bedside table and etc. The idea is that the secondary colour supports the main colour and it will usually be darker than the main colour to create greater contrast. Hence, the space will look more dimensional.

Your 10 percent is your accent colour. Accent colour is used for decorations. Your accent color can be pulled from artwork in the room, on vase, throw pillows, lighting fixtures, decorative paintings, and some other art pieces.  The accent colour will easily draw focus to the items. By doing things this way, the colour combination gives people a sense of balance. If you use it correctly, you can also be a colour combination expert.

Here’s the common colour combinations for home:

01 Wood On White

White is the most common colour used for home colour combination. The colour white is the brightest colour of all. White colour will enhance the brightness of a space. People tends to prefer staying in a bright space, hence the colour white is always the most popular colour. As a flexible colour, it goes along well with almost all colours and still looks pretty.

If you are a fan of the colour white, but you’re worried that white could be a little boring for main background colour, you can always use the colour of nature materials to create some changes. For instance, wood. You can easily create a Japanese Minimalist style or Scandinavian style through that. Clean white background paired with warm wood tone,it creates a cosy environment.

Besides wood, you can also play around with other materials like stones, leather, steel or brass. Using combination of different materials to create a sense of depth on a clean background.

02 Monochromatic Colour Schemes

Using Monochromatic Colour Schemes is the safe way to colour combine. Your main, secondary, and accent colours, can be varying shades of the same colour. You can use Monochromatic Colour Schemes in different spaces using monochrome as the base, then pair it with similar colours of different opacities. You can go for your favourite colour that shows your personality as the main colour, for instance, choose a colour from the colour cards, then from the same colour scheme, pick a gradient of the colour and it will creates an extremely relaxing color scheme.

Use the colours on the ceiling, floor and wall, and this will maintain the continuity of the space. You will have uniform spaces and maintain visual consistency. This can extend the space, and create the effect of a greater space. And this brings a sense of calmness to the home.

03 Cool Grey Tones

To create a cosy and calming space, you have to go for a low opacity neutral colour. That simply means mixing grey into the colour of your choice to give the colour a low key, subdued, greyish tone. It’s the once hyped “Morandi Colours”.

By mixing in grey colour, greyish tones can simply become the main theme colour in a space while still remain low key. These colours can maintain the brightness of the space, and at the same time, they help us to relax, especially when they were used in rest spaces.

04 Soft, Neutral Colours (the milk tea colour palette)

The milk tea colour scheme are referred to as warm and soft hues, runs between terracotta, chocolate, and nude ones such as beige and mushroom. It’s simple but not dull, soft and tender. It’s like a cup of milk tea that you are so addicted to. It’s sweet but not overpowering.

For furniture decoration, this colour scheme creates a cosy ambience. How do we create a space of milk tea colour scheme? You can always go for natural materials with an earth tone, like rattan, bamboo, wood, linen and etc. You can also add in metals, like gold and brass as key materials for accents to enhance the over quality of the space.

05 Pastel Hues

Bright pastel colours are soft and sweet. Like the colours you could find on macarons or candies. From shades of baby blue to pale pink.

If you want neither a plain white space, nor a space with heavy colours, you can always use pastel colours on the big surfaces to create a fresh and healing ambience, and give an impression of softness and cheerfulness to your guests.

If you are new to pastel colours, you can start from a small area. You can even go for furniture or soft furnishing of that colour scheme. This will make the space a little more cheerful and sweet.

You can also try to match pastel colours with other colours in colour blocks. For example, pairing pastel green to pink. Besides creating visual tension, these colour blocks of clashing colours could also create a cheerful, childlike ambience.

06 Earth Tones

Earth tones inspired by nature. It’s a simple, warm neutral colour scheme. The colour brown exudes the warmth of the earth. It’s no surprise that earth tones are one of the best for creating a relaxed and peaceful feel.

Using earth tone as the main colour in a space could instil a sense of calmness into the space. They do go along very well with other colours. The most classic example will be the black, white and grey combination that gives brightness and cosiness to the space, one will never get tired of this colour combination.
