Industrial Influence: ID Industries

by chxadmin

This terraced home fuses modern and vintage styles under an umbrella of industrial finishes.

Designed by ID Industries, the décor of this terraced home is almost entirely composed in finishes of industrial design, with a prevalence of black square pipe railings, bare cement rendered floors, and clay brick walls deliberately left exposed to create spaces that are warm and variously modern or vintage-leaning depending on the furnishings included.

The seating lounge presents an intriguing convergence of industrial, vintage, and modern influences in a single space: the cement rendered floors boldly bear the tell-tale watermarks of a surface trowelled by hand and polished smooth for an aged appearance, while the seating lounge’s sofa and matching armchair are of modern design – placed in close proximity to a simplistic entertainment console surface composed of aged wood.

Briefly interrupting the open layout of the ground floor, is the presence of a staircase leading to the upper floor, the bulk of its cement rendered form and black steel pipe railings cutting into the view down the length of the home to separate the seating lounge from the kitchen. A generous mirror framed in black resides on a wall of the adjacent dining area, reflecting a dramatic decorative feature composed of exposed bricks, while facilitating an indirect view around the staircase and into the kitchen at the far end of the open floor.

Vivid Accents: Amidst the abundance of industrial influences, the surprising addition of modern furniture in a striking shade of yellow provides the interior with a source of levity.

Rustic Corner: This dining space presents a fusion of rustic and industrial influences with bare cement floors and exposed brick walls enclosing furniture of nostalgic design.

The dining furniture present yet another finely balanced combination of disparate influences, with a wooden dining table accompanied by a bench, both apparently designed for use outdoors. In contrast to the outdoor nature of the table surface and accompanying bench, the arrangement is joined by wooden dining chairs of decidedly vintage design for a uniquely warm and eclectic combination.

Acting as a buffer between the kitchen and the rest of the home, an island counter is rendered out of cement to project from the wall at bar height, its bare cement finish melding with the walls and floors. Countertops in the kitchen beyond the bar counter are also formed out of cement, with cabinetry made to match the shade and tone of the staple building material. Complementing the industrial finishes, the kitchen includes fixtures of stainless steel and a backsplash panelled in wood siding to reach the full height of the ceiling.

Bare Essentials: A wide range of surfaces are finished in industrial style: from the floor being formed in the manner of precast concrete panels, to the walls and kitchen counters rendered in bare cement.

Moving up the cement steps and black steel railings of the staircase brings one into the presence of this home’s most striking feature. The roof of this home has been redesigned in modern industrial style to incorporate a skylight over the exposed beams and webbing struts, while the gables were deconstructed to reveal their composition of roughly-hewn brick. In daylight, the result is a delectable modern and industrial presentation rarely seen in a home of this size.

Dramatic Lighting: Intriguing geometric shadows are cast with a skylight positioned directly over a series of exposed roofing struts in the stairwell – and hanging from the corner of a bedroom, an array of pendant lights enclosed in wire-frame cubes.

Boldly Eclectic: The industrial influence seen in the bare cement surfaces of the en-suite bathroom, and echoed in the cabinetry and walls of the bedroom, comes in direct contact with the classically-inspired four-poster bed resulting in a unique convergence of disparate styles.
