Industrial style originated from the Europe in the late 19th century. The most symbolic industrial styled building by then is the Eiffel tower. The style has gained popularity in the USA after that, and it’s vastly used at bars, offices, galleries and etc. These places will go for industrial style as their style of interior design. Hence, the industrial style that we are talking about now, is actually the American industrial style.
How do you pull off industrial style for your home? Let’s discover these essential characteristics to ensure that you’ll get the look you’re craving.
1、Exposed Brick Wall and Cement
One thing special about industrial style is that it retains the natural beauty of things. The essence of industrial style is to retain the original look. You can opt to exposing a red brick wall, stones, cement-silver texture, concrete for the walls. One doesn’t have to paint or decorate the brick wall to bring out raw and rough feeling. Sometimes, the designer will even choose to chip away some bricks to make it looks ancient.
If you’re completed the renovation in your house, but still you would like to go for industrial style, you can opt for red brick motive wallpaper to represent a brick wall in one of the spaces in your house.
2、Neutral Colour Palette: Black, White and Grey
From the earliest time. the colour scheme of the factories is usually the original colour of the materials used. The materials used are normally cement, concrete and zinc plates. Hence, industrial style will never go for vibrant colours but the neutral palette: black, white and grey. If you are worried that the space would feel cold, you can go for a warm wood tone as the transition colour, to give warmth to your space. This creates a natural and earthy industrial style.
3、Distressed Metal Element
Steel and metal are an important characteristic of industrial style. These are go-to materials for enviable industrial style homes. They are usually found on partitions, storage shelves, lighting accessories. The dining set could be made of a mixture of wood and metal. These blend well together to present a huge contrast in texture and play on the industrial feel.
4、Highlight Exposed Pipes and Ducts
Industrial style is the only style that allows exposing pipes and ducts on the ceiling. It shows you the naked truth of a building. The simplistic lighting and the unruly piping and wiring, have eventually become the soul of the simplistic and characteristic space.
If you are opting for light industrial style, you can paint the pipes and wires in white colour. Together with white art stones or white brick wall, paired with light wooden tone, it creates a wide and warm space.
5、Vintage Furniture and Accessories
Soft furnishing from the sofa, couch, lighting accessories, cabinets and etc, could embody a retro and nostalgic ambience. For example, leather sofa is always the first choice for an industrial style space. One can go for brown, caramel or black as the colour of the leather. Try to look for distressed leather is one of the elements that will allow you to reinforce the industrial personality of your living room. A vintage distressed sofa goes along better with industrial style. The older it is, the more story it tells.
For lighting accessories, try to go for metallic ones using only lamp holders and exposed lighting bulbs with no screens. They could be a good extension of any metallic furniture. Opt for pieces with a strong industrial touch like those crafted from steel, copper or iron. You can go for metallic or wooden storage cabinets, or cabinets with metallic doors. It’s practical and functional.
