NES x Skinrock: Opening the Door to Art, Innovation, and Security

by creativehomex

NES Security Door and Skinrock are showing the world that innovation, design, and security can – and should – coexist beautifully.

At a recent showcase at iN Design Lab Malaysia, we spoke to NES Door Marketing Business Development Director Chow Chee How and NES Door Marketing General Manager Kate Ng, along with Skinrock Founder, Stiffler Ueli, and Artist Olga Sedakova, to delve into their collaborative vision that’s set to transform the regional market for security doors and architectural surfaces.

From Functional to Exceptional: The NES Story
For many homeowners, security doors are a necessity, but NES is proving they can be a statement too.

As Chow explained during the interview, NES was founded to challenge outdated perceptions of security doors as purely functional and rigid in design. “In the past, people thought of security doors as unattractive, factory-standard products,” he said. “We wanted to change that.”

With NES, customers no longer have to compromise between security and style. Thanks to ongoing R&D at NES, their doors now combine advanced safety technology with elegant aesthetics. “Every NES door is designed to meet the needs of modern homeowners,” Kate adds. “Whether it’s durability, safety, beauty, or just peace of mind, we’ve engineered those elements in.”

At first glance, you can immediately tell NES’s Skinrock Design Collection apart from others with its innovative use of Skinrock panels that personalise the look and feel of the security door. But more than that, NES doors are engineered for reliability. Each unit is built with reinforced frames, heavy-duty hinges, and multi-point locking systems and other innovative features that ment stringent European standards and CE Mark Compliance. This means customers can rest assured of the door’s performance, safety, and durability.

Enter Skinrock: Where Art Meets Innovation
On the other side of this exciting collaboration is Skinrock, a pioneering Swiss company specialising in the transformation of natural stone into innovative design solutions. Founded by Ueli Stiffler in 2013, the company is headquartered in the Swiss Alps and operates production facilities in India and Malaysia, with a regional sales hub in Kuala Lumpur.

Skinrock offers an extensive collection that blends timeless elegance with modern versatility. Their ultra-thin sheets are crafted using natural stone in a lightweight, flexible format. These sheets are adaptable to both flat and curved surfaces and can be backlit to create striking visual effects, making them ideal for a variety of applications, from interior walls and furniture to exterior façades and artistic installations. Additionally, they are also eco-friendly and free of harmful chemicals.

Stiffler describes it as a “green product” that retains all the elegance of stone but is easier to work with, enabling new design possibilities, especially when paired with other materials or used in architectural features.

Olga, an artist with a background in synchronised swimming and design, saw endless artistic potential in Skinrock’s surfaces. “Stone is timeless,” she said, “but Skinrock allows it to be flexible, cut, and reshaped. It’s like working with a canvas that’s also a building material.” Together with NES, she has begun designing a new bespoke series of security doors that blend art and architecture. Adding to the creative mix, iN Publishers and iN Design Lab Founder Iko In will also be designing a piece for the collection.

“This collaboration with NES marks an important step forward—it takes us to the next stage, to a whole new level,” Stiffler remarks. “More and more, the industry is recognising the potential of Skin Rock. Here’s where NES is our number one partner in helping us grow and expand throughout Asia.”

A Vision for the Future
Both NES and Skinrock are aligned in their belief that limitations can be catalysts for creativity. “When the market slows, we double down on R&D,” Mr Chow said. For Skinrock, this means new textures, new uses, and a growing number of collaborations globally.

In Malaysia, interior designers are responding with enthusiasm. The collaboration is being welcomed as a refreshing shift in how functional elements like doors can also serve as key design features.

The team from Design Base shares that they are excited to explore the design possibilities of NES and Skinrock, particularly in residential and boutique commercial projects where individuality and style matter.

Zyon Studio’s Creative Director is also impressed by how NES and Skinrock came up with such an innovative collection and hopes to see many more. “We’re definitely looking forward to what comes next.”

Together, NES and Skinrock are redefining what’s possible at the intersection of security, design, and innovation. As their collaboration gains momentum, they’re not just opening doors—they’re opening minds to a new standard in architectural excellence.
