Design studio LOVEISENOUGH, led by Loren Daye, has teamed up with Swiss brand USM Modular Furniture to create The Room You Carry, an immersive installation that reimagines the exhibition space as a “nomadic city capsule.” The project opened this week at USM’s SoHo showroom in New York and will run through the end of 2025.
Drawing on her background in hospitality, retail and residential design, Daye transforms USM’s modular system into a material for spatial architecture rather than just furniture. Visitors are invited to enter a meditative environment that reflects both displacement and empathy, emotions tied to contemporary urban life.
The installation layers a canvas tent roof with raw steel, glass and chrome partitions to form protective enclosures. Each USM module is fitted with handcrafted magnetic wood panels, made from reclaimed beams sourced in New York’s Catskills, while personal objects from Daye root the space in both natural and cultural memory.
To achieve this hybridity, Daye collaborated with Matt Hutchinson of PATH, using 3D modelling to experiment with unexpected material pairings. Wildlife photographer Jamie Kennard contributed ambient sound and moving imagery, reinforcing the tension between urban density and natural refuge.
Daye frames the work with a central question: “Within strict limits, how wild can one be?”
“This is one of the most ambitious and conceptually rich installations we’ve undertaken in the US,” said Jon Thorson, CEO and Brand Experience Director of USM North America. “It also marks our first major collaboration with an interior designer in years.”
With The Room You Carry, USM and LOVEISENOUGH push modular design into new territory, not only as functional systems for living but also as expressive tools that challenge how people inhabit, remember and carry their spaces.
