Nestled within a traditional Balinese village near the revered water temple of Tirta Gangga, Villa Pandan Wangi by W+M Design Studio is a serene retreat that balances history with contemporary refinement. Built two decades ago, the villa commands sweeping views of the Bali Sea and Mount Agung, both framed elegantly from the upper-floor lounge. On the ground floor, four bedrooms open onto private garden views, reinforcing a close relationship with the surrounding landscape.
The client’s brief focused on revitalising the interior while preserving the villa’s classical façade and cultural presence. V+M Studio responded with a thoughtful context–contrast approach, introducing modern interventions that respectfully enhance, rather than overshadow, the existing architecture. Clean lines and simplified forms were deliberately employed to create a subtle dialogue with the ornate exterior.
Material selection plays a key role in this narrative. White marble replaces exterior ceramic tiles as a refined interpretation, while light teak wood offers a contemporary counterpoint to the darker traditional timber outside. Furniture follows the same philosophy: restrained and linear indoors, in contrast to the more decorative pieces found externally.

Spatial transitions were handled with particular sensitivity. While bedrooms and bathrooms embrace a stronger contrast as fully enclosed spaces, semi-indoor areas such as the balcony, dining room and lounge adopt a gentler, intermediary expression. Here, old and new furnishings are intentionally combined, allowing heritage pieces to be appreciated as functional artworks.

Through its layered contrasts and material honesty, Villa Pandan Wangi tells a story of time, inviting guests to experience both the past and present in harmony, and ensuring a memorable and deeply contextual stay.
