Form Follows Fortune: This Bangkok Residence Translates Feng shui Traditions into Modern Architectural Language

by creativehomex

What began as a commission bound by feng shui tradition evolved into a meditation on spatial harmony at Baan BK, a 1,008-square-metre family home in Bangkok. While the design framework initially appeared restrictive, it ultimately inspired a creative and balanced approach. Here, ANONYM transforms constraint into clarity, crafting architecture that feels both grounded and fluid.

The architects worked within a series of key feng shui conditions, including a square-shaped floor plan, a south-facing entrance, and a water feature positioned at the front. Rather than treating these as limitations, ANONYM reinterpreted them in a way that responded to Bangkok’s tropical climate and modern living needs.

The home’s square form is softened by the addition of an inner courtyard, which introduces light, air, and a sense of openness to the structure. This void not only enhances ventilation but also creates a serene visual focus at the heart of the home. Inside, a palette of light-toned materials—such as white marble, travertine, white veneer, and off-white paint—combines with warm teak flooring, black metal, and darker stone to create a tranquil yet refined atmosphere.

Throughout the interiors, bespoke detailing such as mosaic patterns and layered textures brings character and craftsmanship. A striking sculptural staircase, carefully designed according to feng shui rules, anchors the interior as both a functional and artistic feature. The result is a harmonious home that unites ancient principles with contemporary Thai design, achieving equilibrium between tradition, comfort, and modern aesthetics.
