Living in Layers: A Stacked-Cube Concept Brings Out the Natural Beauty of this Home in Thailand

by creativehomex

The Stack-Cube House, designed by Touch Architect, brings the intricacy of spatial efficiency and innovative architecture into a harmonious whole. Situated on the owner’s existing hen farm in Amphur Muang, Chachoengsao, Thailand, the residence was conceived to fit within a compact 340-square-metre footprint while fulfilling an extensive list of functional requirements. The solution? A stacked, cube-like structure that maximises utility and elegance.

To accommodate the diverse needs of the family, the house adopts a stacked design with a square floor plan. By layering levels and eliminating unnecessary spaces, the architects created a compact yet functional residence. The interplay between pulled-out sections and recessed areas not only enhances practicality but also optimises circulation within the home.

The house is tailored to suit a young couple and their three children, featuring three bedrooms, a living room, a dining area, a kitchen, and a versatile common room. The design integrates these indoor spaces with a safe and practical outdoor area, primarily intended for the children.

On the ground floor, a pulled-out section creates a welcoming main entrance and an outdoor terrace. The L-shaped layout of the lower level encompasses the living, dining, kitchen, and activity rooms. These spaces are interconnected through large glass openings that provide views of the central terrace, which is anchored by a single tree. For security, the outer walls feature minimal glass openings.

A linear staircase, with concealed built-in storage to maximise space, connects the two floors. The upper level houses the three bedrooms: two for the children and a master bedroom. An L-shaped corridor encircles this level, facilitating access to the master bedroom on the opposite side. This corridor design ensures privacy while allowing each room to overlook the central tree, fostering a sense of connection with nature.

The materials chosen for the Stack-Cube House are a harmonious blend of modern and rustic. The predominant use of white walls and glass openings ensures a sleek and minimalist aesthetic. Wooden-like aluminium trellises enhance durability while providing visual interest and privacy. Meanwhile, wood planks salvaged from an old barn are repurposed for the outdoor decks, ceilings, main entrance door, and staircase, adding a touch of warmth and sustainability.
