One with Nature: The Open Park Villa in the Netherlands Embraces its Natural Surroundings in Every Detail

by creativehomex

The Open Park Villa, designed by i29, is a testament to meticulous adaptation to the diverse natural surroundings. The villa is located within a former military terrain in Limburg, the Netherlands, which has been transformed into a residential park area featuring 43 spacious plots set amidst a wooded environment. This green space was developed with a commitment to preserving the existing road network and green structure. The outcome is a high-quality residential area that provides residents with tranquility, ample space, and lush surroundings.

For the villa, i29’s architectural approach integrates greenery, varied ground levels, and expansive sightlines to create a multifaceted living experience. The ground floor’s spread-out living floorplan unifies the interior into a cohesive space, departing from the conventional uniformity of a compact exterior volume. This innovative design fosters a rich array of experiences within the interior, with changing patterns of light throughout the day, emphasising certain areas while revisiting others later on. The inclusion of a central patio enhances the overall connectivity of the ground floor, introducing air, light, and additional space. This architectural feature blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, intensifying and elongating sightlines. Different ceiling heights and finishes within rooms clearly define distinct areas and functions, contributing to the overall spatial richness. The sunken living area offers a dynamic perspective, continuously altering the occupants’ views and enriching their spatial encounter.

The villa comprises five interconnected volumes of varying sizes and positions, resulting in a diverse exterior appearance from all angles. The consistent minimalist detailing of the facades and canopy, using clip bamboo, enhances the sculptural quality of the structure. The garden design seamlessly complements the outdoor space, tailored to the villa’s volume and facade openings, creating a harmonious interplay of architecture, interior, and landscape.

Inside the villa, custom-made furniture and built-in closets underscore the interior’s quality. Luxurious materials, such as oak wood panels in oil, a continuous cement floor, and Grigio Alpi natural stone base elements and staircase, contribute to the opulence of the living spaces. Cabinets in various areas feature dark-oil-treated oak veneer in the entrance, kitchen, living room, and lounge, while those in the bathroom and walk-in hallway showcase light oak veneer. Open ceilings in the bathroom and ground floor office are painted white, complemented by light oak cabinets. Natural fir wood is employed for the open ceilings in the living room, ground floor lounge, and upstairs bedrooms. The kitchen and bathroom are designed with closed ceilings, and the entrance’s toilet space is constructed with brick and finished with a lime wash.
