Play Becomes Architecture: Smarin’s Gioco Turns Furniture into a Living System

by creativehomex

French design studio smarin has unveiled Gioco, a modular furniture system presented at Triennale Milano that blurs the boundaries between object, space and play. Conceived as a flexible architectural language rather than a fixed piece of furniture, Gioco transforms interiors into interactive landscapes shaped by movement, imagination and collective use.

Constructed from natural cork and spruce wood, the system relies on traditional wooden joinery rather than screws or metal fixings. This allows each element to be assembled, disassembled and reconfigured with ease — forming desks, stages, reading corners or open play environments. The result is a spatial toolkit that adapts fluidly to different needs, from quiet reflection to social interaction.

At the heart of Gioco lies the idea of co-creation. Rather than prescribing form, the system invites users to build, dismantle and reinvent their environment together. Modular cushions, structural components and connecting joints encourage experimentation, turning the act of furnishing into a participatory experience.

Beyond its playful appearance, Gioco also reflects smarin’s commitment to sustainability. The use of renewable materials, reversible construction and long-lasting design principles positions the system as an alternative to disposable interiors. In this way, Gioco functions not only as furniture, but as an evolving spatial language — one that celebrates adaptability, creativity and collective imagination.
