Lumière: Gardens in the Sky Woven into an Urban Landscape

by creativehomex

Located in Bandung, Indonesia, Studio Avana’s residential project Lumiere responds to one of the city’s key urban challenges: limited land availability in the city centre. To overcome spatial constraints while accommodating the owner’s diverse needs, Studio Avana employed a split-level design. The client’s passion for both gardening and modern technology inspired a unique architectural approach that integrates greenery into every level of the home.

Gardens are the defining feature of Lumiere, with five distinct garden areas distributed throughout the house. The central inner court serves as the primary garden, acting as a vertical void that connects all levels while enhancing air circulation and natural light. A vertical garden within this space further enriches the indoor environment with fresh air.

At the entrance, a fish pond made of glass and positioned on the second floor introduces visual intrigue, casting gentle reflections below. Altogether, Lumiere achieves a harmonious blend of nature, technology, and architectural innovation.

The roof garden contributes to energy efficiency by reducing heat absorption and improving insulation, while also offering a serene agricultural space that benefits the broader cityscape. Meanwhile, the façade garden functions as a natural noise barrier and is paired with rotating sun fins that adapt to the sun’s orientation, creating dynamic interior shadows.
