This early summer, Magis transports us to another world with the Chair_One 20th Anniversary—a breathtaking fusion of 24K–gold geometry and raw Etna lava. Limited to just 16 numbered pieces, this stellar release celebrates two decades of Konstantin Grcic’s game-changing design legend.
A Design Revolution Born in 2003
When Grcic teamed up with Magis in 2003, Chair_One broke all the rules. Cast in a single piece of die-cast aluminum, its bold triangular frame and minimalist shell balanced sculptural form with ergonomic precision. As Grcic reflects,
“Designing a chair is the ultimate challenge—it must satisfy both visual beauty and bodily comfort.”
Over the years, Chair_One has earned a place in MoMA, Centre Pompidou, and dozens of international awards—from Red Dot to iF—while retaining its original design purity.
Lava Meets Gold: A Cosmic Duo
To honor this milestone, Magis presents a run of 16 chairs featuring:
-
24K Gold–Plated Shell: Grcic’s signature geometry gleams like a spacecraft hull.
-
Etna Lava Base: Each pedestal is a unique chunk of Sicilian volcano rock, its porous texture echoing a lunar landscape.
The interplay of molten roughness and polished gold creates a poetic, otherworldly sculpture—more art piece than everyday seating.
Every chair is individually numbered (01/16–16/16) and accompanied by Grcic’s signed certificate. No two lava bases are alike, ensuring each work is an utterly unique design star ready for a discerning collection.
“These editions transcend mere furniture,” says Magis’s Creative Director.
“They are historic mileposts and collectible artworks in their own right.”
“From the start, I wanted Chair_One to feel extraterrestrial,” Grcic shared at the launch. “Twenty years on, we’ve recreated a moon-like surface with real lava, letting the golden form hover above like an alien visitor.”
With this limited edition, Chair_One once again blazes a trail between art and design—16 cosmic creations waiting to be discovered by visionaries who dare to collect the extraordinary.
