A contemporary home demonstrates the use of lighting to dramatically appoint spaces, to signify a theme, and to transport residents to other worlds.
Decorated by IDS Interior Design, the interior of this home may appear at first glance as just another result of a neutral palette and fixtures of modern design – but a lingering gaze at the intriguing placements of both the hidden and overt lighting sources would indicate a measure of special attention paid to the effects of light.
The main seating area on the ground floor of this home is furnished with an oblong sofa upholstered in grey leather, accompanied by a matching ottoman and a pair of armchairs upholstered in a lighter grey fabric. The shades of the furniture are echoed by a strikingly veined grey stone panel on the decorative feature wall, lit along the sides by narrow lengths of LEDs and along the bottom by a downward stream of fluorescent white light for an impressive result.
Above the adjacent dining space, a modern chandelier hangs from a round ceiling tray over a circular dining table of black stone. Reflecting the dining table’s functional centrepiece, a chaotic assembly of concentric rings hangs overhead, providing thematic contrast against the orderly arrangement hanging from the negative circular impression above the seating lounge.
A starry night sky is evoked in the entertainment lounge of this home, where the entire ceiling is made to float on a bed of white light – the ceiling tray dotted with the points of fibre optics to resemble stars. Strips of reflective metals are embedded along the walls, reflecting the glow from the ceiling downward and breaking up the collage of fabric acoustic panels adhered to the walls.
The seating lounge on the upper floor of this home is apparently decorated for broad appeal. Modern furnishings of differing designs are placed in a casual arrangement around a carpet bearing enigmatic organic forms. The most compelling aspects of this space are the apparently floating ceiling tray and wall, the illusion achieved with recessed sources of cool white backlighting.
The artful placement of lighting to make various surfaces appear to float is repeated in the private spaces of this home. In the bedrooms, impressive decorative feature walls bearing metallic surfaces provide the contemporary décors with a futuristic lean and reflect the light in multiple directions. Another majestic example of what can be done with lighting is depicted in one of the pictured en-suite bathrooms, where a generous mirror appears to be mounted on a slab of light against a background of marbled stone.
