French Company Instead Turns Brewery Waste into Sustainable Furniture

by creativehomex

French eco-furniture company Instead announced the launch of its new product line. Known for its iconic “Brewed Stool” made from beer brewing waste, the brand is expanding to include tables, chairs, and decorative items, catering to professional clients while reinforcing its commitment to sustainability. The brand recently exhibited its new products at the EquipHotel show in Paris.

Instead repurposes spent grain from breweries, drying it and blending it with recycled single-use food packaging waste to create an innovative material. The company avoids using epoxy resins or petrochemical adhesives, instead utilizing caramelized sugars from the brewing process to bind the two recycled components. The result is a 100% recycled, 100% bio-based eco-material.

This material is used to manufacture seating, tables, and decorative items, primarily for commercial use. Additionally, the furniture’s steel frames incorporate 30% recycled steel, produced in factories near its warehouse in Nantes to reduce transportation-related carbon emissions.

Founded in 2020 by Franck Grossel, Instead aims to transform brewery byproducts into furniture. “Last year, over 2 billion liters of beer were consumed in France, generating more than 600,000 tons of brewing waste. For many breweries, this residue presents ecological, economic, and logistical challenges,” Grossel explained.

Instead’s “brewed furniture” not only offers cost-effective recycling solutions for brewers but also paves the way for innovation in eco-friendly home design.

“As per France’s Anti-Waste and Circular Economy Law (AGEC), 20% of office furniture procured by public institutions must either be reused or made from recycled materials. This quota will incrementally rise every three years, reaching 50% by 2030,” said Christophe Pilcher, Instead’s co-founder. These regulations, Pilcher noted, not only reinforce their vision but also challenge the furniture industry to rethink its practices.
