Sanctuary of Wood: A Warm and Cosy Home Evoking the Beauty and Harmony in Design

Atelier SUN, a distinguished design firm based in Toronto, has masterfully transformed a typical suburban residence in Ontario, Canada, into a serene retreat known as Arty House. The design diverts away from a cookie-cutter builder home where intricate details and the beauty of mood infuse the spaces with a minimal and tranquil vibe.

The property, situated in the city of Ajax on Toronto’s eastern border, originally featured an abundance of structural elements such as columns and beams that encumbered the space. Andrew Sun, the lead designer, reflected on the difficulties posed by the site: “It is such a challenging site. We were surprised to see seven columns floating in the middle of the ground floor within an 850-square-foot floor area. We had to incorporate the structural elements into the function and aesthetic of the design by minimizing the visual clutter of the existing condition and effectively creating a minimal and comfortable living experience.”

The entrance to the house exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere, thanks to the foyer’s charming alcove enveloped in wood panels. The cleverly integrated bench seating, shoe rack, and closet seamlessly blend function with form, creating a comfortable and snug atmosphere for visitors. Right beside the foyer, a mesmerising floating staircase effortlessly extends the millwork’s design language. The wood panel stair wall serves a dual purpose, acting as a privacy panel that seamlessly merges with the staircase’s structural support while also serving as an exquisite canvas that captures the stunning shadows cast by the steps.

Within the living area, a central beam and column are adorned with elegant wood finishes, accented by a tasteful bronze hue. Across from this space, the kitchen and dining areas are adorned with complementary wood panels, creating a harmonious aesthetic throughout. Concealed behind wooden pocket doors, the hidden pantry, dog shower, and separate garage entrance provide discreet and functional additions to the space.

Moving to the upper level, the four-bedroom and three-bathroom configuration has been thoughtfully designed to maintain the welcoming atmosphere found throughout the home.

“The emphasis on natural material, delicate details, and intricate craftsmanship throughout the entire space reconnects the owner to a calming and peaceful lifestyle,” says the designer.
