Artek’s 90th Anniversary: Alvar Aalto Classics Reimagined with Iconic Marimekko Prints

by creativehomex

In a landmark collaboration for Finnish design, heritage furniture maker Artek and textile powerhouse Marimekko have unveiled “Artek+Marimekko,” a limited-edition series that marries Marimekko’s iconic patterns with Alvar Aalto’s seminal woodwork through a masterful veneer inlay technique. Debuting at Copenhagen’s 3daysofdesign (June 17–21), the collection will launch globally in September 2025.

Using precision veneer marquetry, Marimekko designer Maija Isola’s celebrated Arkkitehti motifs, Lokki, Seireeni, and Kivet are inlaid directly into the wood surfaces of three Aalto classics:

  • Stool 60: Aalto’s signature cylindrical three-legged stool, now subtly traced with marine-inspired Lokki gull silhouettes.

  • Bench 153B: The minimalist slatted bench gains a lyrical Seireeni pattern, its organic curves echoing the bench’s form.

  • Table 90D: A versatile birch tabletop enlivened by the geometric mineral motifs of Kivet, creating a dynamic interplay of light and grain.

This technique not only creates shifting shadows and depth as light moves across the surface but also exemplifies sustainable practice, minimizing waste by integrating fabric patterns into small-mosaic wood inlays rather than printed overlays.

Celebrating 90 Years of Artek

Marking Artek’s 90th anniversary, Artek+Marimekko represents a harmonious dialogue between two Finnish design legacies. It showcases Aalto’s warm Modernism enriched by Marimekko’s vibrant, humanistic graphics, underscoring the innovation born when craftsmanship and pattern converge.

First revealed at the prestigious 3daysofdesign festival, the “Artek+Marimekko” line opens for worldwide pre-order in September 2025. With only a limited number of each piece produced, this collaboration offers collectors and design enthusiasts a rare chance to own furniture that embodies the soul of Nordic creativity where architecture, craft, and textile art become one.
