The VB2014 Malaysia Pavilion exhibited alongside 64 countries at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition – Fundamentals, came to a close recently in November 2014. The exhibition took place from 7 June to 23 November 2014 at the Arsenale, Venice and attracted 228,000 visitors, in addition to the 12,214 visitors who attended the preview.
Back on home ground, the VB2014 Malaysia Pavilion was opened to public from 5 to 16 January 2015 at CoDA Gallery, Taylor’s University. The Malaysian curatorial team led by Dr Tan Loke Mun, Dr Lim Teng Ngiom and Sarly Adre Sarkum chose the theme “Sufficiency” to complement the Biennale’s focus on “Fundamentals”.

The Malaysia Pavilion features works displayed on suspended pet cages. The concept of the surreal floating cages illustrated the call for minimal rather than over provision; of satisfying needs rather than the wants … and thus the idea of sufficiency.

A total of 24 participants, comprising a mix of established and emerging architects in collaboration with artists and multimedia designers, worked closely to present alternate ideas of Sufficiency. During the opening ceremony, participants presented their works and their views on the theme “Sufficiency”. A video documentary on the architects and their thoughts and ideas was also shown in the exhibition.
