Grand Gestures: This Duplex Penthouse in India Starts with Artistic Details and Concludes in a Dramatic Fashion

With its striking colours and materials, this duplex penthouse in Pune, India, enchants your senses and leaves a lasting impression.

An atmosphere of grandeur reminiscent of a luxurious bungalow prevails across the living spaces of this 3,436 sqft duplex penthouse. Designed by Vishwa Design Studio, the project located in Pune, India, began in 2019 and was completed in October 2020. The client, who was from a Gujarati family, requested a home that reflects his lifestyle. This requirement became the designer’s starting point in putting together a mesmerising palette of exciting hues and artistic details.

“This dazzling duplex penthouse started off with an entrance embedded with rich, natural wood and finished off with beaten copper. This lends a certain earthiness to the space, and just like that, your visual appetite is hungry to take in more!” The designer says. “Once inside, the soaring ceiling and expansive windows unite to create a light-filled living room, leaving you with the room’s grand sense of space. The first thing that catches your eye is the Pichwai art that spans an entire living room wall, followed by a striking wooden swing. By including these local elements, we have combined contemporary design with the essence of Gujarati culture.”

In the heart of the home, a triple-height central area takes the spotlight with its ascending exposed brick wall that concludes with a skylight on top. An elegant staircase, which features polished wood and raw iron segments, anchors the space and merges seamlessly with the rest of the decor. Over at the eastern side of the house, the room opens up internally using vertical fins, creating an aesthetic dance of shadow and light while ensuring that the penthouse receives ample cross ventilation. For a bolder approach, pivoted windows highlight the living room with different colour palettes on both sides to complement the space.

Material-wise, the spaces are beautifully done up with natural textures and palettes ranging from beaten copper, traditional fabrics, polished and unpolished Kota stones, exposed concrete and brick combinations, adding a sense of wholesomeness to the entire area.

“The house gives a sense of liveliness and comfort, with a hint of moody tones here and there,” the designer remarks. “Along with aesthetics, light and shadows create different dramatic effects throughout the day and year.”
