In this residence in Nara-shi, Nara, Japan, Lusty Design’s innovative approach is evident from the very first glance. Situated on a sloping site, the two-story, wood-frame structure presents itself as a modest one-story house from the facade, thanks to the strategic placement of the entrance on the second floor. This design choice not only enhances privacy but also creates an intriguing visual deception that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
The imposing presence of the house is further accentuated by its low eaves, which extend up to 2 metres high. This feature, combined with the exterior walls clad in black natural stone, lends the house a formidable yet elegant appearance, making it a standout in the picturesque landscape of Nara.
Upon entering the home, visitors are greeted by a space that defies the imposing exterior. The main floor, located on the second story, seamlessly integrates the living room, dining room, and kitchen into a cohesive unit. The design encourages fluid movement and interaction among family members, fostering a sense of unity and openness.
A clever use of level differences within the main living area adds both functionality and charm. The living room floor is set two steps lower than the adjoining dining room and kitchen, creating a natural division of space without the need for walls. This subtle elevation change can also serve as a casual seating area, enhancing the versatility of the living space.
Understanding the importance of privacy and comfort, Lusty Design has incorporated a private room for the elderly mother on the main floor. This thoughtful inclusion ensures that all family members, regardless of age, have a space to retreat and relax. The room’s proximity to the common areas ensures that the elderly mother remains connected to the family’s daily activities while having her own sanctuary.
Contrasting with the austere exterior, the interior design embraces a warm and inviting palette. The use of white and wood grain as the primary colours creates a bright and airy atmosphere, fostering a sense of calm and relaxation. This fresh aesthetic is enhanced by the inclusion of glaze accents, adding subtle touches of elegance and sophistication throughout the home.
