When German minimalism meets century-old craftsmanship, design history comes full circle. This Milan Design Week, fashion house Jil Sander unveiled its inaugural furniture foray in partnership with legendary chairmaker Thonet. The new JS.Thonet Signature collection pays tribute to Marcel Breuer’s 1920s Bauhaus masterpieces, distilled through Jil Sander’s contemporary aesthetic.

Two Series, One Legacy
-
Serious Series: Anchored by Breuer’s iconic S64 cantilever chair (1929–1930), this lineup preserves the original tubular-steel frame and cane weave. Jil Sander’s update adds a high-gloss finish to the metal, then offers four leather-upholstered variants alongside a Dark Mélange edition that honors the classic rattan surface.
-
Nordic Series: Evoking Scandinavian warmth, this range pairs matte-nickel frames with pale oak supports and offers seat pads in natural or bleached leather. Each design is complemented by a nesting side table that mirrors the chair’s proportions and materials.

“My aim was to bring Breuer’s genius into a contemporary frame,”
says Jil Sander. “The structure has withstood the test of time—our role was to imbue it with today’s sensibility. A true classic strikes you instantly, then delights you with hidden details.”
By retaining Breuer’s signature forms—clean lines, seamless joints, and floating seats—Jil Sander’s edits feel both familiar and fresh. The Serious Series’ glossy finish and leather options add a refined edge; the Nordic Series’ wood accents and subdued tones foster an inviting warmth.

The JS.Thonet Signature collection is now available on Thonet’s official website and at select showrooms. Whether you’re a design aficionado or fashion devotee, these pieces offer a rare convergence of Bauhaus heritage and runway-inspired restraint—proof that minimalism never goes out of style.
