Can Architecture Be ‘Printed’? Global 3D Printing Showcases Head to TCT Shenzhen 2025

by creativehomex

3D printing is revolutionizing architecture, manufacturing, and design at breakneck speed, from Qatar’s Doha, home to the world’s largest 3D-printed school, to Amsterdam’s canal-side homes crafted with eco-friendly prints, to France’s biomimetic, 3D-printed performance sneakers.

Want to see these astonishing applications and technological leaps up close? Join us at TCT Shenzhen, 10–12 September 2025.

At the Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center (Futian), TCT Shenzhen 2025 will bring together the latest 3D printing equipment, materials, and solutions from around the globe, offering you a front-row seat to the future of additive manufacturing.

Global Spotlight 1: Doha Builds the World’s Largest 3D-Printed School

The BODXL, the largest 3D construction printer in the world, is now operational on a school site in Doha, Qatar. Developed by Denmark’s COBOD International and run in partnership with local energy, franchising, and construction firm UCC Holding, the machine will print a multi-thousand-square-meter campus structure slated to break world records.

A second BODXL unit arrives on site in late June; together, the two printers will work in tandem to erect the school. Client Ashghal, the Public Works Authority responsible for Qatar’s hospitals, schools, roads, and sewage networks plans to invest USD 27 billion in public projects over the next seven years. If the school project proves successful, COBOD could secure a major long-term client.

Global Spotlight 2: Amsterdam’s 3D-Printed Canal House—Sustainable Living by Design

In Amsterdam, DUS Architects is prototyping full-scale 3D-printed canal homes using the portable KamerMaker additive manufacturing system. Through the Aectual platform, the team now offers 100 percent recyclable, renewable-material production of architectural elements, walls, floors, partitions, and staircases combining environmental stewardship with bespoke design at every scale.

Global Spotlight 3: Artec Leo Takes 3D Scanning to New Heights in San Francisco

The Richmond–San Rafael Bridge’s steel plating, battered by decades of exposure to salt air and heavy traffic, needed precise replacement but original blueprints were unavailable. At 185 feet (56 m) above San Francisco Bay and under five lanes of daily traffic, scanning had to be fast, safe, and cable-free.

Enter the Artec Leo: a wireless, handheld 3D scanner with a built-in touchscreen. Engineers captured accurate measurements of eight corroded plates, manufactured exact replacements, and then re-scanned the new plates for quality control, all without hauling laptops or tethered cables across the bridge deck.

Global Spotlight 4: France’s Experimental 3D-Printed Sneakers—Biomimicry Meets Footwear

KORUX’s EXOSKYN sneakers redefine athletic footwear. Each limited-edition “Print Step” pair is a single-piece, seamless 3D print, no stitches, no logos, crafted from durable, flexible materials. Inspired by the lattice patterns of human bone and connective tissue, the organic structure is generated via algorithmic design. Multidisciplinary Lyon-based designer Mahdi Naim spearheaded the project, leveraging on-demand printing to eliminate waste and enable fully customized fits.

3D printing continues to shatter the boundaries of traditional manufacturing, infusing architecture, design, and fashion with unprecedented creativity. TCT Shenzhen is your gateway to these trailblazing technologies and applications. Whether you’re an industry veteran, a visionary designer, or simply curious about the possibilities, join us at the Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center and experience the cutting edge of additive manufacturing.
