Soft but Subversive: Gufram × Warhol’s Cactus Returns in Wild New Colours

by creativehomex

Gufram and The Andy Warhol Foundation reunite for a second edition of Andy’s Cactus®, launching three new limited-edition colourways in green, orange, and white — each available in just 99 pieces.

First conceived by Italian designers Guido Drocco and Franco Mello in 1972, the CACTUS® coat stand has long transcended its utilitarian role to become a pop-cultural icon — part sculpture, part satire. Its life-sized form, four outstretched “arms,” and more than 2,000 polyurethane spikes blur the boundary between art and design.

In this new collaboration, Gufram and The Andy Warhol Foundation draw inspiration from Warhol’s 1986 Fright Wig self-portrait series. The vivid palette pays homage to the artist’s fascination with artificiality and repetition, while the surface is coated with Guflac®, Gufram’s patented finish that mimics the look of rigid material yet feels surprisingly soft to the touch.

Following the first 2022 release in blue, pink, and yellow, this second chapter deepens the dialogue between Gufram’s avant-garde design and Warhol’s visual vocabulary. Each new hue transforms the same sculptural form into a different expression — a playful paradox that challenges the idea of originality through repetition.

As Gufram’s Charley Vezza notes, “It’s not just about colour. It’s about how colour can rewrite the narrative of an object without changing its shape.”
