Pantone, a global colour authority, has declared Radiant Orchid to be the colour of the year for 2014. Get ready to immerse yourself in this creative and magical tone of purple!
According to paint-maker Pantone, the colour of the year for 2014 will be a shade of particularly vibrant violet shade dubbed ‘Radiant Orchid’ — this is following 2013’s hallmark hue, which some of you may recall was emerald, taking over from 2012’s ‘Tangerine Tango’. In a fittingly radiant press release announcing 2014’s choice colour, Pantone describes the bold tone as ’a captivating, magical, enigmatic purple.’ Generations of artists certainly agree — depictions of purple orchids are in abundance in art history, from Barbara Hepworth’s ‘Orchid’ (1970) to Paul Wonner’s ‘Dutch’ Still Life with Orchids’.
“An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society,” opines Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone’s Colour Institute, in a statement. “An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”
COLOUR PSYCHOLOGY
In colour psychology, purple, which is the base for Radiant Orchid, relates to imagination and spirituality. As an introspective colour, it can encourage us to be in touch with deeper thoughts. If you immediately fell in love with the new colour of the year, it could mean that you aim to create order and balance in your life and you also feel a need to help others.
HOW WAS IT CHOSEN?
Since 2000, the Pantone Colour Institute has been designating a colour of the year to express the global spirit in colour. The chosen colour of the year is not necessarily the hottest in fashion at the moment, but it is a colour crossing all areas of design that expresses a mood, an attitude, on the part of the consumers.
Pantone’s team combs the world looking for future design and colour influences. It keeps an eye on everything from the entertainment industry and films in production, travelling art collections, hot new artists, popular travel destinations, socio-economic conditions to even sporting events. Influences may also stem from technology and the availability of new textures.
