Based on an industrial concept, this house features a harmonious combination of materials and interior details.
Almost anything in this world can serve as an inspiration for interiors. For this winning project called Abby 2 Semi-D, designed by Design Base Sdn. Bhd, old bicycles wheels were the inspiration that got the ball rolling.
“We were commissioned to design a showhouse for a semi-D development,” says interior designer Chew Kherk Min. “After brainstorming on how we can do things differently for this unit, we decided to use old bicycle wheels as the central piece. From here, more decorating ideas came up. It has been an exciting project, most definitely, as we have plenty of opportunities to be as creative as possible!”
The bicycle wheels take centrestage in the dining area, providing a visual focal point that brings together the kitchen counter and dining table.
Based on an industrial concept, this 2,200 sq.ft. house in Ipoh, Perak features a harmonious combination of materials and interior details that are both functional and practical against a creamy white and neutral palette. The bicycle wheels take centrestage in the dining area where they were craftily hung on an unplastered brick wall painted in white. This artistic piece provides a visual focal point for the kitchen counter and dining table which are placed longitudinally next to each other amidst complementary shades of neutrals.
A similar palette and treatment of forms and materials continue in the living room and the bedroom. Overall, it is evident that while decorative elements are aplenty, function comes first. “The second living area has been converted to a ‘working space’ for the owners’ recreational activities or hobbies,” explains Siti Nor Shara Binti Mohd Alwi. “The screen in the master bedroom also functions as a bedhead, dividing the bedroom into two functional spaces – the sleeping area and study area.” On one side of the bedroom where the bed is, a purple feature wall steals the spotlight. On the other side, it was converted into a study area where a calming olive green shade is used.
