In this Chicago home designed by Donna Mondi Interior Design, a delicate fusion of European Classicism and American Modernism reverberates through the spacious interior. There is also a distinct sultry charm that mimics the bygone era of the Roaring Twenties Chicago, resulting in a space that exudes a sense of historical elegance.

“The overall inspiration came from the era of the 1920’s in Chicago,” says the firm’s principal, Donna Hall. “I always take cues from the architecture of a space and then twist it in a modern way.”

Modern with plenty of creative details, this home features bold elements layered with textures and patterns where a cohesive feeling runs throughout the interior design. One of the details that stand out is the ceiling design or the “5th wall” in the dining room. Donna painted the surrounding walls in a glossy black lacquer to reflect light throughout the oval shaped room and then covered the ceiling with an ethereal Maya Romanoff wallcovering. The living room was also given a similar touch – the space features a dynamic plaster ceiling, added to complement and downplay the striking portrait that immediately grabs your attention.

In the master bedroom, Donna went for a palette of gold and white tones, as apparent in the lively, vintage-vibe wallpaper. She also created matching scenes over at the fireplace using two custom KOKET Divine Armoires to add symmetry and balance to this playful space.

The iridescent peacock feather armoires were custom made into chests, then Hall topped them with hung Art Deco mirrors, to adorn either side of the fireplace for luxurious his and hers spaces.

“I like to infuse interiors with elements from different periods and styles to create timeless, unpredictable surroundings. By merging traditional and contemporary styles, the end result is interiors with layered textures, avant-garde elements, and cutting-edge styling,” Donna explains.

In the girl’s bedroom, Donna incorporated bold pops of colour – a design trend that she enjoys using at the moment. To bring out a vibrant atmosphere, a dramatic rabbit print wallpaper is employed. The colours from the wallpaper are complemented by the accessories around the room such as the fuchsia bedding and flowers.
