The private spaces of this family home are coyly sequestered behind veils of exquisitely detailed wall treatments.
Designed by Jashen Interior, the unassuming open layout of the ground floor and the neutral palette over the architectural finishes belie an array of doorways hidden among façades of classically-trimmed wood panels and modern compositions with reflective accents. A stone alter at the foyer presents a trio of Taoist figurines in close proximity to a series of mirrored panels and glass cabinets displaying crystal decanters and Asiatic decorations, while a grey lounge set encapsulates the sunlit seating lounge – its footprint stopping short of the full-height windows at the foyer.
The open layout of the ground floor is subdivided via a false wall – a projection that bridges the white plaster ceiling and the floor tiles, with rectangular cut-outs to enable a tantalizing view of the other side. The remainder of the open ground floor contains a subtly Oriental dining arrangement surrounded by elements of classical aesthetics: a monochromatic marble dining table hosts a matching turntable and darkly lacquered wood dining chairs upholstered in white, while a flowing chandelier hangs overhead and classical trim adorn the nearby walls.
An intriguing arrangement occupies the wall adjacent to the dining space, where an upright piano is nestled inside a contemporary firebox, with the classical trim adorning the mantel serving to neatly wrap the musical instrument. The musical fireplace is encapsulated in turn by transparent display shelves and mirrored panels to produce an elegantly transitional presentation.
The classical wall trim extends to the nearby dry kitchen, ceasing only to give way to mirrored panels and a dramatic three-dimensional painting of a floral tree ringed with intense light. Against a backdrop of cabinets and ceilings adorned with classical trim, a gilded reproduction of the Harrow linear suspension chandelier hangs over the black stone countertops – resulting in an opulent intermingling of white, cream, black, and gold tones.
The majority of the private spaces in this family home shed the classical influences in favour of mirrored panels and other modern accompaniments shaped by stringent straight lines and right angles – with the most novel assemblies featuring doors camouflaged as walls in the hallways of the upper floor.
