With its clean and bright open plan concept, this bungalow fulfils the owners’ requirement for a home that is both practical and beautiful.

The Open Plan of this home is marvellously crafted by Sozo Interior Design into an abode that celebrates space, light and comfort – all of the things that the owners consider are their personal brands of luxury. Led by designer Tenniel Tham, the modern design concept of this home ensures that spaces are well-maximised without compromising style and practicality. Most importantly, this home must truly fit the lifestyle of the owners – a couple with three children aged 8 to 16.

“Practical spaces are key to the success of this project,” says Tenniel. “But to add a touch of uniqueness to the interior, we have designed the spaces in such a way that there is connection between the interior and exterior.” This was executed beautifully through an outdoor space adjacent to the living and dining areas. Here, Tenniel put in a semi-outdoor patio done up in timber flooring to bring in fresh air and view of the garden. From the living room, this picture perfect view is a soothing complement to the overall design of the interior. The patio overlooks a manicured garden and a water feature that comes complete with a seating area.

Inside, there are further inside-out features implemented. For instance, at the dining area, there is a skylight overhead which permits just the right dose of daylight to brighten up the space. Originally the dining area was actually an outdoor space. Here, Tenniel has took down the existing walls and pushed the space outwards to create more interior space.

“We have kept the interior very clean and you’d notice there are very few colours,” Tenniel says. “To add decorative interest, we use different materials and textures.” This is
particularly evident in the living room’s feature wall in which crystal white glass panels are sprayed paint with pristine white, creating a glossy effect to the space.

The same application is also used in the kitchen where a combination of blacks and whites are used. Here the appliances are kept well-concealed in the custom-made built-ins, creating a cleaner look to the overall space. In an effort to keep the ground floor space truly open-plan, the dry kitchen is kept open – you can get a full view of this space at the dining area; while a sliding door divides the space between the wet and dry kitchen.

Beyond the surface treatments, there other eye-catching features included as well. For one, all attention goes to the aquarium which is set right in the middle of the divider that separates the wet kitchen with the dining area. “Through the aquarium, you can see what is going on in the kitchen,” Tenniel says. “This makes the entire space looks livelier and more interesting. Also, it is consistent with the overall open-plan look.”

The bedrooms upstairs are more conventionally designed in terms of layout, due to the practical need for private spaces. However, the Tenniel has put in his special touches when it comes to the soft furnishing elements – once again, playing with different effects and material textures. For instance in the master bedroom, to complement the velvet-like padded headboard, the wall is painted with a grey-toned decorative effect. The same is done in the girls’ room, this time in pink and purples, while the third bedroom is done up in a turquoise. While colours are applied sparingly, where they appear, they are outstanding. At the family room, near the stairway, we see a harmonious blend of bright tones used for its furniture. Designed as a cosy corner, Tenniel has put in a raised platform to give it a warm and comfortable atmosphere.
