HELLER’s Fortune Chair: Snack-inspired Seats with a Playful Palette

by creativehomex

When a snack becomes a silhouette. The Fortune Chair, designed by JUMBO Studio and produced by HELLER, translates the folded shape of the fortune cookie into a voluptuous, weather ready chair. Bright food inspired colours, a pragmatic material rethink and a few clever engineering tweaks make this piece a clear example of how playful inspiration can become durable, everyday design.

The starting point was literal and charming. The curved, puckered geometry of the fortune cookie and the small moment of surprise inside it suggested a balanced, symmetrical seat. JUMBO Studio preserved that double hemisphere profile to create a chair that reads as both an object and a smile. The result is a distinctive form that balances whimsy with visual clarity and physical comfort.

Material evolution and functional improvements

Early proposals used an aluminium shell, but HELLER’s development team opted for high performance engineered plastic to achieve multiple benefits. The final material reduces weight, lowers production complexity and improves outdoor resilience. Practical features include discreet drainage holes and UV stable finishes so the chair resists fading and sheds water. Those decisions turned a concept into a weather ready product suitable for both public and private terraces.

A palette that appeals to appetite and memory

Colour is central to the collection’s appeal. The six finishes reference food and comfort with tomato red, oat beige, olive green, cherry plum, licorice black and the signature fortune yellow. These choices do more than attract attention. They evoke sensory associations that make the chair feel immediate and familiar, a useful tool for hospitality designers and residential customers who want furniture that signals warmth and conviviality.

Form, comfort and durability

Beyond its playful reference, the chair is carefully resolved. The shell geometry provides lateral support while maintaining a stable centre of gravity on uneven surfaces. Materials and finishes are specified for low maintenance, with fade resistant pigments and easy clean surfaces. HELLER refined the dimensions and the edge details to ensure contract level durability and everyday comfort.

The Fortune Chair sits between statement object and utility seating. It works equally well in boutique cafés, hotel terraces and contemporary residential patios. Its vivid colour options make it a useful tool for colour coding large seating schemes, and its singable silhouette performs well as an accent in quieter interiors.

The Fortune Chair shows how design can connect narrative and necessity. Starting from a culturally familiar shape, the project moved through practical product development to become a manufacturable, weather resistant object. It is an example of design that delights and endures.
