“Going the extra mile, the colour consultants from Dulux helped the talented lad personalize his walls with wall art that reflected his personality – a treble clef in the living room and equalizer bar in the bedroom.”

Colours are ever present in our lives so it is no surprise that they have such a big effect on us. Whether we like it or not, we can be affected by a detail as little as the colour of our outfit for the day; brighter shades channel positive vibes while darker tones tend to reflect a more sombre and mundane feel.

Just like outfits, colours in our surroundings such as interiors will have an effect on us as well, especially in a home, as discovered by actor, singer and songwriter Henley Hii, whose bachelor pad recently underwent a makeover by the Dulux team.

The colour consultants from Dulux did more than just suggest paint colours for his home as they went the extra mile and helped the talented lad personalize his walls with wall art that reflected his personality – a treble clef in the living area and equalizer bar in the bedroom.

Unbeknownst to many, Henley is a quiet person and describes himself as “a typical Pisces guy who daydreams a lot”. Fuelled by his love for music, he joined Project Superstar; a singing competition organized by 8TV and emerged champion. With that win, his acting career also kick-started and he has starred in local drama series as well as movies such as Kepong Gangster and The Cage.

While he was in Taiwan in 2009, Henley was having plagued with insomnia so severe that he had to be prescribed with sleeping pills to help him sleep. “It was really frustrating, I forced myself to work out to tire myself out but still could not sleep,” said the 29 year old and added, “I told my manager who sent me back home for 2 weeks and I was better after that so I think home is really where the heart is.”

Henley shared that he does not like bright colours due to his insomnia history, “I’m afraid that bright colours will over simulate the brain.” After considering his needs and requests, the Dulux team presented him with some colour palettes. “I picked soothing colours as my home is where I rest so the colours have to calm me. The yellow sofa is my attempt at interior designing,” chuckled the young star who also said that he never knew how something as small as colour can affect a space.

DIY Paint Tips
Getting the best results when painting your home can seem like a daunting task, but with the right knowledge and information, you can get professional-looking to finish to your ceiling walls, windows and doors. All it takes is a few simple know-hows, which are illustrated below.

Step 1 : Ceilings
Always paint the ceiling first to avoid dripping on walls and floor. For an even coat, paint across the short width of the ceiling.

Step 2 : Walls

Paint borders first and work downwards. It is advisable to start from the brightly lit areas near to windows and paint away from light. This makes it easier to see where you have just painted

Step 3 : Window & Door

Before you start, mask areas not to be painted like hinges, knobs or latches. For windows, paint the inner frame first, the other frames last. For doors, paint any moulding first, then the panels, the horizontal and vertical segments and the edges last.

Step 4 : Floor

Paint the floor last, after the walls and trims have dried thoroughly. To get the best results, ensure you vacuum and wipe the floor clean of dirt before painting.
