6 Space Planning Tips for a Modern and Comfortable Home

by

When you have decided on an interior style that you love, suits the space and your lifestyle, the first thing you should do is probably go to a professional. You have plenty of ideas and big dream for your house, mix-matching different interior elements and etc., but do consult your interior firm for a full guidance on how to do exactly and correctly.

Colours and Space
No one can make a room physically bigger or smaller, but using the right kind of colour, furniture or architecture choices, you can make the room feel larger. For example, a softer and soothing colour such as cool blue with large windows allow natural light to come in makes a soothing and wider room ambiance. Strong colour on a short wall decrease the depth but increases the width, while strong colour on the long wall you get a long, thin corridor effect.

Lighting
Choose warm light over day light to create a more relaxing and soothing ambiance and prepare a few lighting options in the living room, such as a stand lamp and table lamps at your TV cabinet side or bedside, to create a more private moment. The lighting can always be the focal point of the room. It enhances your home style and complement with your interior, while also stands out its own characteristics.

Soft Furnishings
We already know that in every room, soft coverings like rugs and carpets absorb noise, but they do the same job to light as well, which maximizes lights in the room and maximizes the feeling of space at the same time. Use soft furnishings with vibrant colour to bring up the liveliness of the space, make it a focus to the eye in a monochromatic colour scheme.

Furniture
Sizes does matter. Choose the right size for your space. Oversized furniture in a small space not only makes the room appear cluttered, it also makes it hard to move around. While small-sized furniture does the same to a large space, as people tend to look for a smaller and cosy corner to hang around, too much empty space will make you feel vulnerable and uncomfortable.

Texture and Pattern
There are plenty of ways of tricking the eyes into interpreting the space size. For instance, vertical lines draw the eye upwards, increasing the feeling of height; Horizontal lines such as colour block deck brings the height down but increase the feeling of width. While the mirror is a basic tool in interior design, there are multiple effects in terms of textures, patterns, and sizes. There are different kinds of mirrors used in interiors, the clear reflecting mirror is often use in minimalist interiors or in vanity rooms – making for fuller spaces, or installed partially near the ceiling to increase the height of the room, or as a panel in the living room. While dark mirror surfaces show less reflection, they have the same effect on space but in a more subtle manner, which makes it one of the common materials used in modern interiors.

The Focal Point
Rather than focusing on the room with so many elements inside, we can create a relatively large focal point in the room itself. It’ll draw all eyes to it instead of the less-favour feature in the room, such as the low ceiling or the narrow corner. So, pick up one large art piece and hang on your empty feature wall, instantly, the wall becomes larger and so is the space.
