NS BlueScope’s coated steel is the outcome of intensive R&D and product testing, making it lightweight and yet durable, the ultimate material of choice for builders.

Thanks to NS BlueScope’s range of innovative aluminium-zinc coated steel, homeowners can now rest assured that their properties are protected and enhanced by durable, versatile and weather-resistant steel. The state of the art metallic coating technology in BlueScope plant incorporate the aluminium-zinc alloy layer precisely onto NS BlueScope products to ensure that your roof is able to endure Malaysia’s tropical environment with its rapid cycling between hot and humid weather.

How does BlueScope’s proprietary alloy formula of 55% Aluminium, 43.5% zinc and 1.5% silicone work better than ordinary zinc-coated steel? It works base on the concept of Double-protection: The Zincrich area in the alloy acts as the sacrificial layer, protecting the base metal, while the aluminium layer acts as a durable barrier protection. The combination of these 2 characteristics make BlueScope ZACS® steel more durable and effective against corrosion compared to the ordinary Zinc-coated steel.

The durability of NS BlueScope aluminium-zinc coated steel is ensured further with a series of industrial standard tests conducted by SIRIM Berhad (formerly the Scientific and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia), including a 240-hour long salt spray test. A visual comparison of the test results between BlueScope’s ZACS® coated steel and ordinary zinc-coated steel reveals the obvious differences in durability, with the aluminium-zinc coated steel showing significantly less deterioration. This means longer lasting performance and better corrosion resistance when subjected to harsh tropical weather.

On top of this, each piece of steel roofing typically measures over 8 feet in length, covering significantly more area for its weight than a piece of ordinary clay tile or cement tile while necessitating fewer battens (with spaces measuring between 1 meter to 1.2 meters) and less support structures. While the greater coverage-to-weight ratio for steel roofing enables a significant reduction in the cost of a building at the design stage, steel roofing can be installed at a more efficient rate than conventional clay roofing tiles, entailing further cost-savings in labour during the construction phase.
