Nurturing Nature: A Thoughtful Gazebo Design that Blurs the Line between Structure and Nature

A project by Garis Architects, Nature’s Catalog offers a serene haven for trackers to unwind, meditate, and immerse themselves in the tropical landscape, all while doubling as an observation tower. Adhering to the site’s natural topography and character, the gazebo’s design emphasizes the experiential aspect of the structure.

Nestled amidst the verdant flora, the gazebo’s form serves as a metaphorical interpretation of geometrical shapes, eliciting profound reflections and interactions. The design comprises three interlocking box frames that adapt to the undulating terrain, creating multi-level platforms that cater to visitors of all ages. The gazebo’s vertical configuration enables the public to savor the scenic tropical canopy view that would otherwise be out of reach.

While the height between the platforms varies, some spaces necessitate cautious movement, encouraging adults to bend and maneuver with care. In contrast, children can frolic and play freely in these areas. The limited spatial allowance underscores the gazebo’s adaptability, transforming into a reading table, cantilever seating, meditation box, and cat ladder- akin to a treehouse in the forest.

As it is located deep in the tropical forest, the gazebo is constructed from materials that were manually transported and assembled on-site, minimizing any disruption to the pre-existing conditions. The preservation of trees and plants is of utmost importance, and every effort is made to mark and conserve them.
